This is the Story of Elder Dobri
Long thought to be a fake story, the tale of Elder Dobri, or the Saint of Baylovo (his place of birth), is true. We wanted it to be true and were so happy when we found that many many people have not only met him but had the chance to see him in action: giving of himself for others.
98 year old Dobri Dobrev, a man who lost most of his hearing in the second world war, has traveled 25 kilometers every day for decades from his village in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to the city of Sofia – a trip he made by foot until recently – where he spends the day begging for money.
Though a well known fixture around several of the city’s churches, known for his prostrations of thanks to all donors, it was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected — over 40,000 Euros — towards the restoration of decaying Bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages, and has lived entirely off his monthly state pension of 80 Euros and the kindness of others.
The following clip is from the Film “The Mite” and it has a short segment on Elder Dobri:
It is always beautiful when we are able to recognize those that deserve recognition while they still live. This year, he will be 100 years old.
