No, She’s Not Thumbelina… She Just Knits with Giant Needles and Yarn

In 2011, Laura Birek decided to knit something giant. But she didn’t really know where to start. There were no tutorials available, so she was flying blind.

First, she bought six pounds of unspun wool roving, then she went to the hardware store and bought broomsticks to act as knitting needles. When the broomsticks were too small, she went back and bought 1.5″ diameter PVC pipe. She turned each five-foot length of pipe into “knitting needles” by adding duct-tape tips, and just started knitting. A few hours later, she had the Giganto-Blanket.

Laura Birek decided she wanted to knit something GIANT, but I didn’t really know where to start – so she decided to start with a blanket. She calls it the Giganto-Blanket…
